Last week on the day before Thanksgiving, a Dallas man saved a baby from a burning apartment building after he talked the child’s mother into dropping her daughter from a third-story window and into his arms, according to KXAS.
“I didn’t want my daughter to lose her life,” Shuntara Thomas told the station. “He told me: ‘Just trust me. I got her, I got her.’ So without even thinking, I just dropped her.” The 1-year-old girl was caught with graceful, soft hands by Byron Campbell, one of the first people to show up to the terrifying scene. You can watch iPhone footage of the ordeal below.
Campbell told Dallas News that he saw smoke coming from an apartment building, so he drove over to investigate. When he saw that it was on fire, he immediately ran inside and began knocking on doors, telling people to get out. When he came out he joined a small group of people who were using a mattress to help people jump from windows, but then he heard a woman yelling that she had a baby. “I told her to drop the baby, and the baby was crying,” Campbell said. Firefighters report that six people escaped the building via windows and no one was injured. The fire ultimately destroyed 24 apartments housing 40 people, totally demolishing the structure.
“Throwing my baby out to a complete stranger that I didn’t know…but I do thank him because without him my child’s life would not have been saved,” Thomas told KDFW. “As long as I got my family, I’m good. So I may not have anything else, but it teaches me not to be thankful for the material things but to be thankful for everything that I do have.”
